Karl Lagerfeld says -
“There is no rule for chic. It is something right for the moment, done in the right way. Elegance and chic have nothing to do with age or what you are wearing and it does not have to be expensive. Chic comes for free, what counts is how people feel about themselves”
There is no doubt that Chanel is one of the most powerful brands in fashion today – the brainchild of Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel who launched her career making hats in Paris in 1910 before going on to revolutionise women’s fashion.
The current trend for the Chanel look is fuelled by two things. Firstly the recently released film Coco avant Chanel , which depicts the early life of Coco Chanel. Coco is played by Audrey Tatou and her personification is very convincing. Audrey has been quoted as saying that when she was wearing the couture dresses from the archive she really believed she was Coco ! I thoroughly recommend you see it – the story and the clothes are so inspiring !
The other factor fuelling the Chanel look is the influence of Karl Lagerfeld. Although Chanel’s clothes inspired our mothers and grandmothers, it is thanks to the genius of Lagerfeld, who took over as creative director of the Chanel fashion house some 26 years ago, that the look is still at the forefront of today’s fashion.
Lagerfeld has created a fashion cult. What fashionista would not gladly swap her worldly wealth for a Chanel boucle jacket, a quilted 2.55 bag, or anything with the double-C logo? Young celebrities such as Keira Knightly, Kate Moss, and Erin O’Connor queue up to wear his designs.
The good news for the rest of us is that the Chanel look has been captured on the High Street at affordable prices and one of the key fashion trends this autumn is the French mademoiselle look.
So what is the Chanel look? The beauty of it is its simplicity - think the ‘little black dress’ accessorised only by a string of pearls. It is not a cluttered look but one of quiet confidence using fine fabrics and cut.
